Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks among the most common cancers worldwide, and is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death. Worldwide, there are more than 600,000 cases of HCC every year, and the 5 year mortality is nearly 90%. Treatment of HCC is complex, and involves understanding of the cancer as well as the underlying liver disease. This special issue of Translational Cancer Research serves as a review of all issues surrounding diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
