In vivo cancer metabolism is defined by the nutrient microenvironment

Targeting the metabolic aberrations of cancer cells has emerged as a promising strategy to inhibit the tumor growth. The genetic landscape and cell origin of cancer cells are known cell intrinsic factors, which define cancer cell metabolism. However, the relevance of cell extrinsic factors, such as the in vivo microenvironment, is poorly understood. Here, we provide a perspective on the recent findings on how the microenvironment shapes the in vivo metabolism of cancer cells.
