Smooth sailing for immunotherapy for unresectable stage III nonsmall cell lung cancer: the PACIFIC study

The tumor microenvironment, the soil in which tumors grow in the body, has become a rich source of potential therapeutic intervention. Tumor cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, dendritic cells, macrophages, T cells, and numerous other cell types collaborate to create a protumorigenic environment. Initial attempts to alter the microenvironment focused on endothelial cells and angiogenesis, but there is now a growing appreciation of the complex contributions of each cell type to tumor growth.
